AP/Statesman - Headline: Survey points to trouble for Dems on Election Day
I've read views contrary to this, but the preponderance of the data seems to support at least some losses for the D's. I'm kind of depressed about the D's chances, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to vote.
Here's a reason to be optimistic - NPR: "Obama Approvals Hit Low But He Still Beats Clinton, Reagan". These guys were both elected twice. Maybe the sky isn't falling in.
NPR: "Fannie, Freddie Could Cost U.S. $259 Billion".
Will these bailouts never end? How did we get in this mess? I suppose the D's will get blamed for this too.
Huffington Post: Student Loans
There's an interesting comment to this article on student loans. The person who wrote the comment makes a strong case for the need to reform this policy and cites the problems that the way student loans are handled can unfairly cause difficulties for people.
NPR: Health Care
An amusing video and good article on issues related to the implementation of the health care plan. It's seems in favor the reforms, but the funny thing is that it was made by a health insurance company executive. Personally I have yet to hear any viable argument against 'Obama Care'. The crux of the R's argument seems to be just the fact that it was implemented by the D's. The 'Party of No' doing what they seem to do best.
LA Times: "Airlines ride new fees, cost cuts to big profits"
OK, this is a pet peeve. I just flew from VA to WA (my home state). It's a long, miserable flight. And I'm fairly big (6'3") and the chairs just aren't comfortable. I wish they'd take some of these profits and make flying a more enjoyable experience.
LA Times: Headline: California voters turning against Prop. 19 and Prop. 23, poll shows
California leads the country in many ways. Auto emission standards for example have usually started in CA and then the rest of the country follows, so I see these issues as being of national interest. I support prop. 19 (legalize marijuana) and I've done several posts on this (LinkHere and LinkHere). Prop 23 would suspend CA's global warming laws. I sure hope this one doesn't pass. This past summer even convinced Russia that global warming is a viable and looming threat.
NY Times: "Report Says State Senators Manipulated Casino Bidding"
Both D Senators. I'll add this to my corruption blog momentarily. See my running tally (LinkHere) on the R's vs. the D's on corruption. So far the R's are ahead, but the D's seem to be catching up.
NYTimes: "China Faces Concern Over Inflation"
In my inexpert but well researched opinion, this is ultimately good for China and good for the U.S. too. I've done several other posts on related topics (LinkHere LinkHere).
The Wash Post: Headline: NPR fires Juan Williams over anti-Muslim remarks
Contrary to what the R's say, NPR is an exceptional source of unbiased, interesting and non-mainstream news. I don't think Juan Williams was out of line in what he said, he was being interviewed and he expressed his personal opinion. I think the issue boils down to the tight rope NPR has to walk because of the constant criticism they endure from the R's over their minuscule government funding. Being fair and impartial in all respects is of paramount importance in this medium. I wish we were more like the U.K. where publicly funded media is respected.
