As a % of GDP, we spend more on health care than any other country in the world.  And we are the only industrialized country in the world that does not provide health care for all it's citizens.  By any fair measure, we currently rank @ 15th in the world for standard of living.  There is no such thing as a private hospital in this country because all hospitals are required to take any patient with an emergent condition, whether or not they have health care.  Those with (health care) pay the cost's for those without (health care).  Depending on the location, as much as 75% of a hospitals emergency cases are from people with chronic conditions that could have been treated very inexpensively, before it became an emergent condition.
