What happened to Freedom of Speech? Oh ya, that only applies to big corporations who want unlimited rights to bribe, I mean contribute, to public officials & R wing campaigns.
Some books that have been banned (LinkHere)
Captain Underpants' (Kids book)
Come on - Kids think this is funny. It's not as strange as Nadya Suleman selling her under things at a garage sale (LinkHere)
Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary This is just plain stupid.
Fahrenheit 451 A book in which the state rules that non-conforming books must be burnt at 451 degrees F. This seems truly self-serving and incredibly redundant. This is censorship of the most egregious kind.
The Grapes of Wrath This is a fricking classic. STUPID!
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Apparently banned because of the political leanings of the author.
Harry Potter Very bizarre. The article equates Harry Potter to Star Wars in my generation.
Some more are James & the Giant Peach, the American Heritage Dictionary and Grimm's Fairy Tales.
The article doesn't state this, but I'll bet a lot of these books are banned in TX. They have a bizarre history in that state of setting incredibly regressive (opposite of being an evil Progressive) stipulations on text books.
Any of your favorites here?
And somewhat of a caveat.
I think that people should be liable for the lies, innuendos and accusations they make, especially in the heat of political campaigns, and probably otherwise. I think that people used to be held responsible, but I don't quite know how we got to this tradition of nasty campaigns. I don't really see this (honesty in political campaigns etc.) as a Freedom of Speech issue. It's just a matter of libeling other people, an honesty thing, almost like stealing. I don't know, it's an interesting point to ponder.
What limitations do you think should be imposed on this type of medium? I think it's a very slippery slope to go down, and to err on the part of openness is most supportable. Having an 'Adult Section' for certain types of publications, like most book stores do, I think is a reasonable compromise between control & openness
No wonder Americans are so prudish.
